The plateau. That dreaded place that no one trying to lose weight and get fit wants to ever go. But no matter how hard you try, I’m pretty sure just about everyone trying to be fit will hit their plateau. You work your butt off, eat all the right foods, drink the right amount of water, and you start to see results. Until one day you realize the scale is stuck. (more…)
Tuesday morning. Driving to work. Jamming out to my favorite radio station. Nothing out of the ordinary, just another day like every other day of the work week. As I was listening to one of those songs that you know the words to but don’t really know who sings it, I caught a glimpse of a bumper sticker on the back of the car in front of me. It kind of stood out because it was this big white sticker on the back of a shiny new car, though the sticker itself was actually pretty plain with only one marking on it: 25K. I knew that this last weekend our city had its annual river bank run, which has races that run 5, 10, and 25 kilometers. I figured the person driving that car could have possibly ran in the race this last weekend, then I went back to singing the song on the radio. Then something hit me. (more…)
Life is full of peaks and valleys. That might not seem like a very profound statement, but it’s true. As humans we are constantly moving within a constant cycle of the ups and downs of this crazy ride we call life. I used to think that the way I interpreted my life would always reflect which part of the cycle I was going through, but I’ve come to see things from a different perspective. Let me explain. All around us there are outside circumstances that we can not control and there are things that we can control. And if there is one thing that we have the ability to control, it is (more…)
After a little bit more than a month of pulmonary rehab, I am now moving on to phase two of my health transformation. What does phase two consist of, you ask? I’m glad you asked! Phase two for me consists of no longer attending the pulmonary rehab classes twice a week and moving on to exercising on my own. There are a few reasons that I’ve moved through rehab this quickly, including my new hours at work that make it a bit difficult to make it into rehab. But I didn’t just quit this process of pulmonary rehab just because of a change in my work schedule. I promise I’m not done working towards my goal of having a set of lungs that are as healthy as they can possibly be. In fact, I’m actually getting to a point where I am ready to work harder. It’s been about three months since I was in the hospital, and I’m getting stronger every day. (more…)
Summer break is finally here! So what does that mean? Well, for me it means a lot of awesome things. When I think of Summer, I think of hanging out with friends and family, reading in the backyard, working out, going to the Farmer’s market (that’s a new thing as of last Summer), taking my dog for walks, and the list goes on and on. This Summer, however, will be a little different. (more…)
I know it has been a couple of weeks since I have written a post, but I promise I didn’t forget you guys! As I mentioned in my last post, the last few weeks have been riddled with term papers, presentations, and exams. Even though I have been super busy, I’ve been loving just about every minute of it. At the end of each semester I am reminded once again of how stressful being a student is, but I am reminded even more of why I love it. Yes, it’s stressful. But it also (more…)
I have now gone to four sessions for pulmonary rehab, and I thought I would give you guys a status report. Remember when I said that the thing I was most concerned about was my ability to be patient with the process? Well, I got a little impatient this Thursday and it ended up in me having to get a hard lesson on (more…)
I am so excited right now that I had to share with you guys something really awesome: I’m getting a new pair of lungs! It’s time to toss out this old asthma-ridden pair and install a band new pair of lungs that will work just as good as any other pair. And the best part about this lung transplant is that it doesn’t involve cutting anything open or taking anything out or putting anything else into my body. So, you may be wondering, how in the world am I going to get new lungs? Well, (more…)
Part of me really wants to start telling you that I had an awesome week, but that wouldn’t exactly be the truth. I didn’t have a horrible week, but it wasn’t all that amazing either. With the onset of Spring, I have been itching to get outside and start exercising more, especially now that I feel almost like myself again after being sick. My asthma flare ups have been less severe and less frequent, so I figured it was time to (more…)
Happy Monday, everybody! I know that Monday is not exactly most people’s favorite day of the week, so I thought I would share something that might give you something to look forward to at the end of a long work day tonight. I don’t know about you, but every now and again I start to have a craving for a nice and cold, sweet, creamy bowl of ice cream. There are two problems that often arise from this craving (more…)
